Jackson JS 22 Dinky Arch Top

Recommended Posts

I currently own a Schecter C1 Custom, which I love but developed a loose connection which I looked at but was unable to fix. Since the shops where shut for repairs I ordered a new guitar. Orginally the Ibenez 2018 RGRT621DPB bu after a month still never came.  So I bought a Jackson JS 22 Dinky Arch Top, which came really quick.

For a low priced guitar seems really good overall(although cant really compare as not much experience with different ones).  I found solo stuff easy to play with my fingers flying over the frets at a breeze.  But I found when playing rhythm songs with distortion sounds a bit muddy.  But i'm guessing this is expected from the stock pickups which are Jackson® High Output Humbucking.  I'm thinking if I changed the pickups then this would be an excellent guitar.

I play a lot of rock/metal stuff like Joe Satriani,  Metallica but also Mozart, Beethoven, Bach but with distortion. For example Solfeggietto by Cpe Bach but with the distortion that starts from low end first string up to high up and also my own stuff.  So looking for ideas for good pickups that have plenty of distortion, low end but also good for solo stuff that doesn't sound muddy.

So my question is does anyone also have experience with this guitar and what do they think? Can you recommend any better pickups to upgrade the guitar?

Thanks in advance

James

No experience playing a Dinky but really, just choose pickups to suit your genre.  My choice would be EMG or Lace Sensors due to the noiseless tech and your preference for high gain.  But Di Marzio do signature pickups for Joe Satriani and Steve Vai, plus the classic super distortion model.  or Seymour Duncan for more classic models like the Pearly Gates, Seth Lover or Antiquity models.

That Schechter looks really nicely put together. The Dinky reminds me of Ibanez-based customs I used to see a guy in a Belfast Band playing, way back in the early 90s.... Rachel's Asylum was the band, later just "Rachel's", Guy went by the name of 'wild Bill', was a hell of a player.  Same visually interesting combination - the stripped down, 'natural' look, but with the hi-tech SuperStrat vibe. Back when these were 'new' designs, it was a big departure from the dayglo pink / metallic paintworks that were all the rage. Worth trying something alternative with the pick-ups if the guitar is otherwise excellent. Guitarfetish always impressed me with the quality of their pickups - they have a huge range of HBs. Scroll past the ones obviously designed for rockabilly, and they have everything from PAF-types to double-rails to actives. Always very decent in my experience, and at the price you could afford to try a few. On that basis, their 'quickplug' design is an excellent option if available on the pups you like - easy way to try a couple of different options very quickly, just a couple of screws and a plug. Doesn't seem to have any perceptible effect on the sound. They also do pre-wired harnesses, which I've never tried personally but about which I hear good things, if you need to rewire and , like me, you'd rather not get things too complicated!
