Gretsch GAS. GAH!!!

Recommended Posts

I foolishly tried one of these today in GuitarGuitar. For the money, they're brilliant. I tried it alongside a Setzer signature and it wasn't a million miles away from being as good. Damn, it was only the mega bucks for a Setzer that was stopping me having Gretsch GAS in the first place!

With their three price band rtanges, Gretsch are now playing a blinder. I've never had a Gretsch because of the megabucks cost of the Pro range, but the 5xxx Electromatic ones are really very nice indeed now - and, like Fender, Gretsch themselves show them enough respect not to push them as 'cheapos'. Even the 2xxx Streamliners aren't so bad - if i was looking for one I knew I wanted to rewire / fit with new pups and whatever, basis for ap rojec,t one of those could be the birdy.

I'm currently GASing badly myself for the LE lefty G5240 in blue with the trem..... My number one next purchase was going to be a Player Strat, but I think this has jumped it in the queue..... Course, they'll likely not be around any more by the time I sell off a load of gear to afford it, but....

Glad you have made this post! I have been after a telecaster for donkeys but then I saw the 5622 electromatic centre block. Totally want one now. Should the “made in China” tag put me off?

I play bass in my band and the guitar will only be used at home and in the rehearsal room. Feedback shouldn’t be an issue. The 5622 seems to be about £100 cheaper than the 5422 at the moment.

IMO the ‘made in’ label shouldn’t put you off at all. China makes decent instruments, both my Squier CV Tele and Epiphone Casino Coupé are MIC and punch well above their price tags. The Gretschs are no different, at least the ones I’ve played. It seems that when China makes proper, licensed products, rather than uncontrolled rip offs from spurious factories, the quality is good.

For complete transparency, I didn’t buy the 5420, although it was a very close shave. Instead, I saved myself a big chunk of change and just bought a Bigsby for my Epi...

Not wrong about China. Those CVs are good enough to carry the Fender name, imo. To be brutally honest, the only thing that would make me hesitate about paying retail for one of those is thatfor just about £100 more I could buy a MIM Fender. The CV Squiers are close enough that if they did label 'em Fender, they might fidn them a threat to the lwoer endo f the parent brand...
