IanNeedsHelp
Hi everybody, I’m really sorry if I’m breaking etiquette by posting in the wrong area or wrong thing. Apologies. I kindly need some help. A family friend has passed away, in Thailand where I’m typing this from, and evidentially he has a LOT of guitars and I need some help to understand if they’re of value or cheap copies. The job I’m in isn’t anywhere near the music industry and I wouldn’t know the right from the wrong end of a guitar. So if anybody is kind enough to help me with these I’d appreciate it. I’m going to upload some pictures here, again I hope that’s the right thing to do. Basically I’m after a “cheap imported rubbish sell it for £20” or “that’s a gem, don’t let it go for less than X” please. Thanks again, Ian
Crusoe
I'm not sure what model that Fender is, but I'd say it should be worth a good few quid. The Grote and Marlin will probably be worth a couple of hundred quid each, at the most - Marlin were a cheap beginners' guitar when I was in my teens, over thirty years ago. Some people might buy them for nostalgia's sake, but they aren't a great instrument. I've no idea about the Barclay or the Paramount, but I think they should be worth a few hundred quid each. The Paramount looks quite nice. I'll be interested to see what someone who knows more than I do thinks. They are all definitely worth more than £20. Dad3353
Good afternoon, @IanNeedsHelp, and ... ... Plenty to read and amuse you here, and lots to learn and share. S'not easy, nor very reliable, giving estimated value through a set of photos; doubly so when well away from 'local' markets. Here's a rough guide of what I would value these at; others may well have very different opinions... Paramount Les Paul copy (chambered, which is quite unusual...) : Looks to be in good condition, not a 'known' name, so not really collectable. I'm a particular fan of semi-acoustic guitars, so would pay a little more than the 100€ or so I think this is worth. A little more still if there's a fitted hard case (this will apply to them all, so...). Dark green Marlin guitar : Absolute opposite of 'my' style of instrument, and active, to judge from the LED's and battery cover. Missing its vibrato plate, and just a little 'scruffy-looking'. Assuming that it's all in good order, and the electronics work, an enthusiast could pay maybe 200€ or so, maybe more if it's a unique or rare model. I've seen one or two advertised at over 1000€, but no idea if they were really sold at that price. White Fender : I'm going to pass on this one; a Fender expert would have a far better estimation (assuming it to be genuine; there are many very good fakes out there...). I've never seen pickup covers like that, but the serial n° suggests a date of early '80s. It may be valuable, but would need proper inspection to know. The green acoustic is a budget guitar, and looks to be in good condition. I'd value that between 50-100€. The last one, the Grote archtop, is a Chinese-made 'jazz box', with a P90-style pickup. It looks clean; I'd pay around 100€ for a guitar like that. There, that's my tuppence-worth. Subject to correction, completion and/or contradiction from others. Hope this helps. They weren't terribly good back then; comparable with Encores or maybe low end Squier (Squier would have been considered better quality, maybe just because of the Fender association). We didn't know much about guitars back then (I still don't ), so maybe it was better quality than I remember, but I do know that it was terrible for going out of tune. The hardware just wasn't very good.

You absolutely right, in general, but it would appear that there are one or two specific 'high-end' models that are quite prized (can't remember details; can't remember yesterday's breakfast, either, so...). No idea if this is one of those, but being active makes it a cut above the common-or-garden Marlin, I think.
Fr3ntzen
Hi everybody ! I want to buy my first guitar (for blues). FENDER SQUIER Sonic Stratocaster Pack 2TS 10G vs. FENDER SQUIER Affinity Series Stratocaster HSS Pack What do U think about the HSS? Wait for your answers ! Thanks ! ezbass
Depends on what you like. The HSS is probably a bit more versatile IMO, as you can achieve a more raunchy tone from the humbucker as opposed to the thinner sounding, bridge single coil on a traditional Strat. However, the in between tone of position 2 (bridge and middle) is compromised.
