bottomofthebarrel
Haven't decided what to do over the coming winter, but here's a couple of instruments I've messed with so far. The first is a 4/4 cello from ebay. It had a broken neck and the scroll had snapped in half. I also replaced all the black wooden bits with proper ebony and improved the finish slightly. The second is my one and only elctric guitar made from bits purchased on line. Nothing fancy, but it works and I like it!
Andyjr1515
Wow! A neck repair on a cello????? Goodness - that takes some skill The partscaster looks pretty darned good too Any further details?
bottomofthebarrel
Ha! More luck than anything! Google and Youtube are indeed our friends. I used two hardwood dowels through the neck into the heel with the new ebony fingerboard on top. The broken off scroll turned out nicely and I painted all the edges on the cello to match the new finish on the head.

bottomofthebarrel
I have one of these laying around, waiting to get put together. The wood looks good and I wonder if Danish Oil would be the way to enhance the look further. What say yea?
Andyjr1515
Personally, I would go tru-oil. Then you have the option of slurry and buff silky smooth satin or gloss, depending how you apply it. But any suitable finish will transform how it looks. Go for it!
bottomofthebarrel
Thanks! I'll take a look at tru-oil. I like the sound of silky smooth!
bottomofthebarrel
Does it (tru-oil) darken the wood this much?

On a darkish wood, it will darken it pretty much the same as most other finishes - similar to the colour the wood goes when wiped with a damp cloth. On lighter woods (like maple) you get a slightly amber tone. The above is naturally a very dark wood ( n.a. Black Walnut?). It would go the same colour if you wet it.
bottomofthebarrel
Finally got around to order some tru-oil. I'm getting kind of excited!
bottomofthebarrel
If I for some reason wanted to dilute tru-oil, what should I use? (unless it's a totally bad idea)

I lot of people do that, so it's not a bad idea depending how you are going to use it. Folks certainly thin it down to spray it, as far as I know.

bottomofthebarrel
Turns out my "uke-kit" doesn't quite look like the one above, but it's close enough. Drilled a hole in the heel of the neck and placed a dowel in said hole. All this wood fiddling takes it's toll. Time for a meal before I continue the "build"
bottomofthebarrel
The neck is on. Some light sanding is next, it's already pretty smoth.
