Personally, I would go tru-oil. Then you have the option of slurry and buff silky smooth satin or gloss, depending how you apply it. But any suitable finish will transform how it looks.

Ha! More luck than anything! Google and Youtube are indeed our friends. I used two hardwood dowels through the neck into the heel with the new ebony fingerboard on top. The broken off scroll turned out nicely and I painted all the edges on the cello to match the new finish on the head.
